Post-Tooth Extraction Care: What to Do Next

After a tooth extraction, proper care is essential for promoting healing and preventing complications. At Dr. Kinga Kubieniec’s office, we ensure that our patients leave with clear instructions to make recovery as smooth as possible. Below are the steps you should follow after your tooth extraction.

Post-Tooth Extraction Care: What to Do Next

1. Control Bleeding

Immediately after the extraction, your dentist will place a gauze pad over the site to control bleeding. Bite down gently but firmly on the gauze for 30-45 minutes. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and apply pressure for another 30 minutes. Avoid spitting or rinsing, as this can disturb the clot and prolong bleeding.

2. Manage Swelling and Pain

Swelling is common after an extraction. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 10-15 minutes at a time, with breaks in between. Do this for the first 24 hours. Pain is also typical, and over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. Follow the dosage instructions provided by your dentist.

3. Rest and Take It Easy

After your procedure, you must rest to let the area heal. Avoid any strenuous activity for at least 24-48 hours to promote proper healing. Try to keep your head elevated, even when lying down, to reduce swelling and discomfort.

4. Watch What You Eat and Drink

For the first few days, stick to soft foods such as soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. Avoid hot drinks, spicy foods, and anything crunchy that could irritate the extraction site. Do not use a straw, as the suction could dislodge the clot and lead to dry sockets.

5. Oral Hygiene

Maintain good oral hygiene, but be cautious around the extraction site. After the first 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution (one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) after meals to keep the area clean. Avoid brushing directly over the extraction site for a few days.

6. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can delay healing and increase the risk of complications like infection and dry sockets. Avoid both for at least 48-72 hours after the extraction.
